Wie gestern bekannt wurde gibt es Pläne, den touristischen Süden noch besser zu erschließen.
Hierzu ist geplant, den Flughafen Chania nur noch für Inlandsflüge innerhalb Griechenlands zu nutzen.
Bereits vor 2 Jahren wurden die Grundstücke zum Bau eines neuen Flugplatzes auf der Lassiti Hochebene käuflich erworben.
Nun ist es soweit, die Planung ist abgeschlossen und der Bau kann beginnen.
Probleme bereitet den Konstrukteuren nur der kräftige Wind der jedoch mithilfe von Gegenwindanlagen beruhigt werden soll.
Ist der Flughafen estmal einsatzbereit dann verkürzen sich die Transferwege in die neu entstehenden Ferienregionen an der Südküste erheblich.

Laut Meldungen verschiedener englischsprachiger Seiten hat die griech. Regierung die Ausschreibung für den neuen Flughafen in Kastelli auf den Markt gebracht:

New $1.4bn Crete airport goes out to tender

The Greek Government is to offer a 45% stake and a 35-year contract in a tender for the construction and management of a new E.1bn ($1.4bn) airport at Kastelli, which will replace the existing facility at Heraklion in Crete when it opens in 2015.

According to Environment Minister George Souflias, the government will retain a 55% share in a new operating company with the winning tenderer and contribute E.220m ($315.9m) towards the construction costs of the new facility.

The government says that the new airport will have a capacity to handle between 5.5m and 10m passengers a year and is hopeful of opening the new facility by 2015.

Investors are being asked to submit their bids for the project by February 9, 2010 and the government said that it expects to appoint the winning bid in the first half of next year

Greece to retender construction projects -official

ATHENS, Nov 9 (Reuters) – Greece plans to relaunch tenders for two major construction projects to expand an Athens tollway and build an airport by the middle of next year, a senior infrastructure ministry official told Reuters on Monday.

The previous government had tendered new motorways worth 1.8 billion euros ($2.7 billion) in the greater Athens area and a 1 billion airport in Kasteli, Crete.

But the official said new tenders were necessary to shield the projects from any appeals by local mayors and environmentalists.

"We hope we will have launched new tenders within the summer next year," the senior official who declined to be named told Reuters.

"We believe in the projects and they will be implemented but we have to clear them from a few problems, so that they are not blocked," the official added. (Reporting by Angeliki Koutantou; Editing by Dan Lalor) ($1 = 0.6678 euro)
