Cashier, villagers nab bank robber in Crete
An amateur robber armed with an air gun was caught yesterday by a cashier and passers-by outside a bank in western Crete from which he had just stolen 10,000 euros.
The 31-year-old suspect, whose name was not made public, told authorities he had decided to turn to bank heists after finding himself in dire financial straits, according to Hania Police Chief Markos Pangalos.
As the suspect entered the Hania Cooperative Bank in the village of Alikianos, some 5 kilometers (3 miles) southwest of Hania, the manager pressed the alarm button. Police arrived on the spot in a matter of minutes, just in time to take delivery of the robber from citizens who had caught and disarmed him. The man told police he had tried to rob another bank on Tuesday, but left after finding it shut.
